Driveway & Sidewalk Sand Deicing Products – Weighing the Pros and Cons

Winter is here, and along with it, comes the challenge of deicing your driveway and sidewalk. Slippery walkways can be a hazard to you, your family and anyone that visits your home. So, it’s essential to keep them safe and secure. Sand is one of the most popular choices for de-icing, but is it the best choice for you? In this article, we’re going to examine the benefits and drawbacks of using sand on your driveway and sidewalks.

Pros:

Affordable: Sand is an inexpensive and readily available product. You can buy a bag of sand at your local hardware store or home center for a few bucks.

Non-Toxic: Unlike salt, sand is non-toxic and doesn’t harm the environment. Sand deicers won’t damage your lawn or vegetation, and it’s safe for pets and wildlife.

Traction: Sand provides excellent traction on slippery surfaces. It improves grip and reduces the likelihood of slips and falls on icy sidewalks and driveways.

Cons:

Messy: Sand can be messy and difficult to clean up. It can be carried into your home on shoes and clothing, and it can also clog drains and damage flooring if not thoroughly removed.

Limited Effectiveness: Sand doesn’t melt ice or snow, so it’s not a good solution for severe winter conditions. It can, however, provide temporary traction to help you get in and out of your driveway or commute to work.

Storage: Sand is bulky and takes up space. You’ll need to store it in a dry, covered area, which can be a challenge if you don’t have much storage space.
